Trends in Using Machine Learning in Healthcare Applications

Prof. Sabah Mohammed, PhD, ISP, IEEE Senior Member, PEng

Lakehead University

Ontario-CANADA

Health care and biomedical data are becoming increasingly complex with the advancement of pervasive monitoring devices, the genomic sequencing technologies, the availability of interlinked open medical big data and the high adoption of electronic health records. For this reason health care is continuously expanding the knowledge forefront as new methods of acquiring data are becoming available. However getting the value out of such data need to rely on the ability to best interpret available data that may originate from a number of sources, including healthcare professionals, patients, and medical devices. Machine learning/deep learning and AI are transforming the healthcare industry, improving outcomes, and changing the way doctors think about providing care. It is improving diagnostics, predicting outcomes, and just beginning to scratch the surface of personalized care. This keynote talk provides the roadmap and the research trends for using Machine Learning in health data analytics to accelerate discoveries.

Biography

Dr. Sabah Mohammed research interest is in intelligent systems that have to operate in large, nondeterministic, cooperative, survivable, adaptive or partially known domains. Although his research is inspired by his PhD work back in 1981 (Brunel University, UK) on the employment of some Brain Activity Structures based techniques for decision making (planning and learning) that enable processes (e.g. agents, mobile objects) and collaborative processes to act intelligently in their environments to timely achieve the required goals. Dr. Mohammed is a full professor of Computer Science with Lakehead University, Ontario, Canada since 2001 and Adjunct Research Professor with the University of Western Ontario since 2009. He is the Editor-in-Chief of the international journal of Ubiquitous Multimedia (IJMUE) since 2005. Dr. Mohammed research touches many areas including Web Intelligence, Big Data, Health Informatics, and Security of Cloud-Based EHRs among others. More information on his teaching and research can found from his web page at http://flash.lakeheadu.ca/~mohammed

The Next Generation Software through Learning Analytics

Prof. Jinan Fiaidhi, PhD, ISP, IEEE Senior Member, PEng

Lakehead University

Ontario-CANADA

In recent years, driven by rapid, phenomenal advances in computing, storage, and communication, practitioners, academic institutions, and researchers are increasingly seeing th need for new student-centered approaches to education. While several approaches for this type of learning exist, Constructionism through learning analytics is one of the most popular and well-developed ones. Generally, learning analytics deals with the development of methods that harness educational data sets to support the learning process. This keynote talk highlights the importance of this new paradigm in developing the next generation of information technology systems.

Biography

Dr. Jinan Fiaidhi is a full Professor and the Graduate Coordinator with the Department of Computer Science, Lakehead University, Ontario, Canada since late 2001. She is also an Adjunct Research Professor with the University of Western Ontario. She received her graduate degrees in Computer Science from Essex University (PgD 1983) and Brunel University (PhD, 1986). During the period (1986-2001), Dr. Fiaidhi served at many academic positions (e.g. University of Technology (Assoc. Prof and Chairperson), Philadelphia University (Assoc. Prof), Applied Science University (Professor), and Sultan Qaboos University (Assoc. Prof.). Dr. Fiaidhi research is focused on mobile and ubiquitous learning utilizing the emerging technologies (e.g. Cloud Computing, Calm Computing, Learning Analytics, Mobile Learning, Personal Learning Environment, Social Networking, Enterprise Mashups, Big Data and Semantic Web). Dr. Fiaidhi research is supported by the major research granting associations in Canada (e.g. NSERC, CFI). Dr. Fiaidhi is a Professional Software Engineer of Ontario (PEng), Senior Member of IEEE, member of the British Computer Society (MBCS) and member of the Canadian Information Society (CIPS) holding the designate of ISP. Dr. Fiaidhi has intensive editorial experience (e.g. Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Software Engineering and Its Applications (IJSEIA), Editor in Chief for International Journal of Cloud-Computing and Super-Computing (IJCS), Editor of IEEE IT-Pro, Associate EiC of the Journal of Emerging Technologies in Web Intelligence). More information on her publications and news can be found at her Web page: http://flash.lakeheadu.ca/~jfiaidhi
